Silver Cross ‘Rickshaw’ 1944.

Rickshaw’s were only made from 1943 to 1945. Production of prams and pushchairs was severely restricted during the war years. Having only 2 wheels and a single handle ‘The Rickshaw’ represented a significant saving on raw materials which were rationed at that time and until some time after the war ended.

Telescopic Pushchair c1946. Thought to have been made by Handly Page who were aircraft manufactures. Its believed that they produced pushchairs and other goods in order to keep their workforce going after the end of the war when orders for new aircraft dried up. It was also made in red and green. The original owners main vehicle was a motorcycle and sidecar as this pushchair folds up quite small it was ideal. It has been repainted, upholstery is original.

Though the ‘Rickshaw’ was never intended to be towed behind a cycle. People were very inventive during the war Years, she looks quite comfortable I think. This picture is titled VE Day in London, 8th May 1945.
