Porcelain Handled Perambulator c1900. Make unknown. This beautiful late Victorian pram has an imported blue porcelain handle and was once part of The Jack Hampshire Collection, again bought by us from the Silver Cross sale. Note the stabilising straps underneath, they are not an original feature but have been added at some time in its early history. I have tried to push it without them but it tips about in an alarming fashion, many infants were in fact injured and even killed in these unstable prams. It has a rudimentary calliper brake attached to a chain and a tip and tilt hood, as shown in the two pictures. Many early prams had hoods that could be used at either end of the pram. It has had some restoration work i.e.:- new hood, the upholstery has been repainted, its had new straps and the chassis and wheels have been black leaded, the body has been patched where necessary. |

Edwardian Perambulator c1906. Make unknown. A lovely early Edwardian pram bought at Beeston auction, it has had some restoration work but not much, all it needed was a new hood and a good clean and waxing. (Think it had been in a chicken shed!) Another from the Jack Hampshire collection.

Hitchings Perambulator c1909. This beautiful pram is so well balanced that it is a joy to push and rocks gently in the slightest breeze. Its has mudguards and a rudimentary calliper brake that hangs from the handle on a chain. Found with 2 inches of water inside it, it has been fully restored apart from the upholstery which is original and when dried only needed some coloured shoe polish to restore it. |
